Odisha Government to provide food for poor at Rs. 5 in five districts


From this April, the government of Odisha would provide meal at Rs. 5 to urban poor people in five districts of the state. The service, named “Aahar” would cover the districts of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Berhampur and Rourkela which have large number of migrant laborers. Around 25,000 people are expected to avail the facility, in which corporate houses are expected to assist. The state’s food supply and consumer welfare department and the urban development department would set up the necessary infrastructure to provide plain rice and dalma (a combination of dal and vegetables), payas and a few other food items that form part of traditional Oriya diet. Under the scheme, NGOs having experience in handling food related schemes will be assigned the job of distributing food, which would be checked by health inspectors of different municipal corporations.
